We all have an incredible ability to change someone's day with a letter but it is something we all find quite hard to fit into our busy lives.
Each month we collectively write to a stranger. Someone who's been nominated to receive an outpouring of love in the form of anonymous letters.
This month, however, we're writing open letters to those who have experienced Sexual Assault
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The month was designed to raise visibility and awareness about the realities and prevalence of sexual violence, while combating rape myths and victim-blaming. Sexual violence thrives when it is not being talked about.
- 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 16
- 1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault as an adult
- 9% of incidents are ever reported to police
- 13% of cases recorded by the Police result in a conviction
For the month of April, we are writing to victims of sexual assault. The letters will be placed - to be read - on the wall outside Pepa. We want victims to find comfort in the anonymity of our walls, and we want the public to get a better understanding of the issue and participate in the discussion.
We want victims to feel this “I see you. I hear you. What happened was not your fault. You’re not alone. And I’m not afraid to be seen and fight alongside you.”
From a teenager who had been raped but has not come forward: “Right now we live in a world where telling is detrimental, instead of beneficial. Until it’s the other way around, victims will remain silent.”
Your voice is necessary in changing how we view sexual assault. Don’t worry if you think you don’t know what to say, write a sentence, give a quote, tell your story. We want to fill our walls with messages from people who are willing to fight alongside the victims.
You are also welcome to write an anonymous letter to yourself. This is an opportunity to let things go if you’d like to take it.
You can come in to Pepa and use our pens, paper, stickers, glitter or you can post your letters to us at 45 Greenpark St, Christchurch.
Thank you so much to past and future participants,
The teams at Pepa & The Cake Eating Co
